Introduction

As you push deeper into the post-apocalyptic world you know and love so well, do so with this facsimile of the iconic RobCo Industries Personal Information Processor 3000.

This Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas Pip-Boy replica is not a toy, it is an exquisitely detailed die-cast metal and ABS version of the iconic device that graces every Vault Dweller’s arm from the day they turn ten in the Fallout 3 universe.

This meticulously engineered arm-worn device, featuring a working IPS LCD screen that replicates the look and sound of a vintage CRT, has been designed to take you to a place where the richly detailed Fallout world flows around you like never before. Tune the working FM radio to hear your favorite real-world radio station; illuminate dark corners of your own personal wasteland with its bright LED flashlight; tap to fix the glitching vertical hold or check out the environment for radiation spikes using the dynamic tilt-to-click Geiger counter simulation. Use your Pip-Boy as a reliable enough timepiece, complete with alarm clock function, to ensure that whether your quest takes you through your own ruined future, or finds you waking from a deep and dream-filled sleep, you can measure time’s passing with this functional device.

This Pip-Boy 3000 is more than just a replica – it’s tangible, wearable evidence of the captivating world of post-apocalyptic survival. So take at least your left hand out of your pocket and limber up like a pro; it’s time to prepare for a Wasteland experience the likes of which you’ve only dreamt about.

Using your Pip-Boy 3000

The Pip-Boy 3000 housing is constructed from a mix of die-cast zinc and engineering-grade ABS, all coated in a robust silk-finish paint with silver detailing. The Pip-Boy is brought to life by a four-inch, 320 x 480 in-plane switching (IPS) LCD display [1] tucked behind a water-clear Tritan screen, as its FM radio blasts out audio via the two-watt speaker. The Pip-Boy’s cuff lining is a soft grade of cold-cast fabric-coated polyurethane foam [2]

The Pip-Boy 3000 has been issued to you in a protective transit case. Take care when lifting the Pip-Boy out of the transit case, ensuring that you lift the stand at the same time as it is nested into the cuff area of the Pip-Boy. The spacer bar, USB data-capable charging cable, hex tool, and antenna extension cable are also stored in the transit case. Keep these Pip-Boy accessory components safely in the transit case when not in use.

The Pip-Boy’s display stand is machined from a solid plate of aluminum finished by sandblasting and laser etching, with a TPR (thermoplastic rubber) docking comb [3] and a soft rubber layer coating its base. The charging stand also acts as a neat place to store the Pip-Boy’s spacer bar hex tool [4].

Charging the Pip-Boy

Before first use, charge your Pip-Boy for at least five hours or until it is fully charged. To charge, insert the USB-C cable supplied into the USB-C socket on the back of the Pip-Boy [5], and connect to a suitable 5V-powered USB socket. It is recommended that the Pip-Boy is placed on its display stand while charging. While the Pip-Boy is charging, the four vertical slots under the screen will glow orange. The orange glow pulses gently while the Pip-Boy is charging; when the Pip-Boy is fully charged the orange glow is steady.

When the Pip-Boy is charging and the screen is powered on, the Pip-Boy also indicates its charging status via a miniature thunderflash and battery icon displayed in the top left of the display.

Battery charge status and current battery voltage are displayed on the Engineering screen (STATS > Status > ENG).

When powered down and not charging, the Pip-Boy enters hibernation mode during which it can last around six months on a full charge. When fully charged, the lithium polymer power cell provides approximately eight hours of screen time (or four hours of screen time with the radio playing). These timings are given only as a guide, as the duration will depend on a number of factors such as the screen brightness setting, the volume of the radio, and other environmental factors.

Powering up the Pip-Boy

The Pip-Boy is powered up and down using a long press (three seconds) of the power button [6]. Each time the Pip-Boy is powered up it goes through an in-universe initializing boot sequence. To conserve power, and for convenience, the Pip-Boy’s display can be turned off by a short press (momentary press-click) of the power button. If the Pip-Boy has been turned off by a short press, then the display is turned back on by a short press of the Power Button.

If the Pip-Boy is running on internal power, the display will turn off (timeout) after a set amount of time. The display can be turned back on after a display timeout by a short press of the power button. By default the display timeout is set to five minutes. Adjust the timeout in the Settings submenu  (DATA > Settings > Display > Display timeout). When the Pip-Boy is plugged into a charging supply, the display does not automatically time out.

Installing the Pip-Boy

When installing the Pip-Boy on your arm, it is easier if you are sitting down. Undo the catch [7] at the bottom of the housing by pressing on the part of the catch nearest the four slots and carefully open the Pip-Boy. Rest it, cuff side up, on a soft, non-abrasive surface (such as your knee) with the smaller end pointing away from you. Place your left forearm into the Pip-Boy, over the hinge so that your hand just clears the end of the cuff, and carefully close it around your forearm, ensuring that you don’t pinch your arm in the join between the two halves as the case closes. Ensure the locking catch is closed so that the surface of the latch is flush with the Pip-Boy housing.

If the Pip-Boy is loose on your arm, move it slightly further up your forearm, or wear it over the top of a garment sleeve.

If the Pip-Boy is too tight to fit your arm, remove one or both of the pieces of foam padding, and/or install the spacer bar.

Fitting the spacer bar

Using the RobCo hex tool supplied, remove the small blanking screw on the back lower edge of the rear cuff housing [8] and store carefully for future use.

Snap the spacer bar into place. The spacer bar is a tight fit. Push the spacer bar’s U-shaped bracket over the catch part of the rear cuff housing. Note that you will need to help the spacer bar end barbs over the edge of the cuff housing rim [9] so that they can engage with the cuff housing before it will be able to snap fully into place.

Using the RobCo hex tool, screw the two locking screws (supplied) into place [10] and [11].

Store the RobCo hex tool in the front of the Pip-Boy stand [4] or in the transit case.

Note that with the spacer bar installed, opening and closing the cuff latch and placing the Pip-Boy on the display stand are unaffected. However, with the spacer bar installed, while the Pip-Boy will rest in the transit case, the transit case lid will not be able to close fully. Please remove the spacer bar if you wish to store the Pip-Boy in the transit case with the lid closed.

Congratulations, whether you have fitted the spacer bar or not, your Pip-Boy is now installed on your arm and you are now ready to enjoy your Pip-Boy 3000.

Displaying the Pip-Boy

The Pip-Boy has been designed to be exhibited. Using the display stand is the perfect way to put your Pip-Boy on show. To mount the Pip-Boy on the display stand, place the stand on a level surface and slide the display stand comb features [12] into the four front slots below the screen [13].

Lean the Pip-Boy down and back so that the back of the catch [14] rests securely in the bottom of the stand cradle [15]

Always ensure that the stand is placed safely on a secure and level surface. Take care not to leave the charging cable trailing next to the Pip-Boy where it could get snagged by people walking past or children playing nearby.

The Pip-Boy can be charged when on display.

Controlling and using your Pip-Boy

The Pip-Boy has over 50 different screens and thousands of list entries spread throughout the Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas Pip-Boy modes, as well as a playable minigame.

Display

(DATA > Settings > Display)

Scroll to highlight Display, press click to enter the Display Settings screen, which includes the following options:

Color – Select Custom color to adjust the Red Green and Blue values to create the exact display color you want. Select Green, Amber, White or Blue to set the Pip-Boy’s display color as a fixed color, or “default” to make the color change automatically when the Pip-Boy changes between Fallout 3 and New Vegas modes. Note that choosing  anything other than “default” manually fixes it so that it will not change color automatically when the Pip-Boy mode is changed between Fallout 3 (green) and Fallout: New Vegas (amber).

Brightness – Adjusts the global screen brightness level from 20 (maximum ) to 1 (minimum ), then press click again to confirm. Adjusting the brightness adjusts the screen illumination, the orange charging glow, the rad meter backlight and the illuminated mode select buttons. Setting 1 is extremely dim and is only suitable for nightstand viewing. At setting 1 the display cannot be seen in daylight and can hardly be seen when there is any ambient light. Turning the Pip-Boy off and turning it on again returns the brightness setting to maximum brightness.

Display timeout – Adjusts the number of minutes before the Pip-Boy powers down the screen and automatically goes to sleep from 1 minute to 30 minutes. If the timeout is adjusted to “Never”, it does not automatically go to sleep, and will stay powered up until the battery is depleted. Regardless of the setting, the Pip-Boy does not go to sleep when it is connected to a power supply and being charged.

Glitch on tap – Glitch on tap adds a random amount of glitching effects to the display: a very authentic-looking display wobble, static and both vertical and horizontal hold issues. When activated, glitches can be caused or resolved by tapping on the top of the Pip-Boy.  Once selected scroll to choose Off, Short or Persistent.

Tap threshold – Scroll to highlight and then press click to select. Set the tap threshold sensitivity, where setting 1 is the most sensitive.

CRT jitter – Press click to toggle between on and off. CRT (cathode ray tube) jitter adds a varying blurriness to the screen graphics similar to the effect seen on a faulty CRT.

Vertical shift – Moves the display position up or down by a few pixels. Scroll to select the value, positive numbers move the screen up and negative move it down.

Show Debug info – If the Pip-Boy software is misbehaving or gets itself in a muddle, then enabling this option will provide useful onscreen information that will help us work with you to diagnose the issue. Show debug info is not required in normal operation.

Sound

(DATA > Settings > Sound)

Sound Effects volume – Adjusts the volume of the sound effects and the alarm sound, including the two alarm tunes. Note that adjusting the volume here does not affect the radio volume (which is controlled in the Radio screen). CAUTION: the sound effects and radio volume can be very loud when listened to through headphones, so please set the volume to 7 (or lower) when plugging headphones in.

Mute speaker when headphones connected – Due to the fact that the headphone socket doubles as an antenna extension socket, auto muting of the Pip-Boy’s speaker when headphones are inserted into the socket is not possible. Highlighting this option will allow you to listen to the Pip-Boy’s sound effects and or radio through headphones without the audio playing through the Pip-Boy’s speaker at the same time.

When seeking, the FM radio scans through the radio frequencies until it finds a strong enough signal to play. When a strong enough signal is located, the radio locks on to it, displaying the frequency on the screen and the Pip-Boy plays the radio broadcast. Roll the thumbwheel [19] to fine tune the frequency. In areas with a poor reception (weak signal), attach the antenna extension cable supplied by plugging it into the 3.5 mm headphone jack on the back of the Pip-Boy [20].

As the radio plays the graph displays a wave form of the audio signal dynamically.

Threshold — Scroll down to Threshold and press the scroll wheel to select the signal threshold adjustment. Roll the scroll wheel to adjust the threshold between 1 and 9, where 1 is extremely sensitive and 9 will only tune into very strong signals.

Volume – Roll the scroll wheel to adjust the volume between 1 (lowest) and 10. Note that the radio volume is adjusted independently to sound effects volume which is set in the Pip-Boy settings (DATA > Settings > Sound > Sound effects volume). CAUTION: When the radio signal is strong and the radio volume is set to maximum, the headphone volume might be uncomfortably high. Please reduce the radio volume before putting headphones on and then adjust to suit your comfort level.

RSSI – Received Signal Strength Indicator. The Pip-Boy FM radio is actually a real radiation detector, detecting electromagnetic radiation in the form of radio waves. Highlight RSSI and press click to enable. Radio signal strength is displayed by a dynamic bar chart in the right hand corner of the audio signal graph. The signal strength in decibels (dB) is shown at the bottom of the graph.

Caring for your Pip-Boy

The Pip-Boy 3000 replica is a valuable piece of high-tech, arm-worn equipment and should be handled with care. Clean only with a soft, slightly damp cloth; do not immerse in water; do not force the Pip-Boy open. To protect the Pip-Boy while not on your arm, display it safely on its display stand or store it and the stand in its transit case. The Pip-Boy should only be used when the ambient temperature is between 10˚C and 40˚C (50˚F to 104˚F).

When not being used, the Pip-Boy should be charged once every six months to maintain the battery in optimum condition.

Leaving it on charge constantly

The Pip-Boy may be plugged into the power constantly. When the Pip-Boy is plugged into the power the power runs the Pip-Boy and charges the battery at the same time. When the battery is fully charged, it stops charging the battery, and as the Pip-Boy is running on the external power supply, the battery only slowly loses power just by a trickle of self-discharge. This process takes a long time. Eventually, when the battery discharges to a certain level, it will start charging again until it is full, and the cycle repeats. The battery also has a built-in thermal cutout, which means the battery cannot overheat. So, it is perfectly ok and safe to leave the Pip-Boy plugged in as it will not see significant cycles.

Upgrading your Pip-Boy

Periodically there may be important upgrades to your Pip-Boy that will add new features and functionality. Please go to www.thewandcompany.com/pip-boy to check for the latest update.
